Retired Teachers Enjoy Christmas Luncheon

More than 75 members of the St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association met at the Treen Instructional Center Thursday morning to enjoy the group's annual Christmas luncheon.

The theme was Christmas/Saints, with many wearing holiday season attire and others wearing Saints football jerseys. It was a grand event with food, fellowship, and music by the Covington Talented Music students on stage.

President Eric Sacks gave recognition to the several organizations that have supported the STRSEA activities throughout the year, among them Humana, the St. Tammany Federal Credit Union, and AMBA. A number of members brought gifts to share with Project Christmas, and a number of door prizes were distributed to those lucky persons in attendance.

The group's next meeting is a very important one. The annual "Legislative Meeting" will be held on January 23 at the Treen location, and among the items to be discussed will be proposed legislative actions affecting retiree pensions. Legislators will be invited to attend, with speakers coming from the La. Retired Teachers Association (Rodney Watson, Executive Director) and the Teachers Retirement System of Louisiana (Dana Vicknair, Director of TRSL).

The group is also looking forward to making plans for a spring bus excursion tour which will highlight an area attraction for a day's outing for interested members.

Retired Employees Enjoy Meeting

Several dozen members of the St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association met at the Treen Instructional Technology Center in Mandeville Thursday, Nov. 14, and learned a variety of health-maintenance tips and suggestions.

President Eric Sacks hosted the special "Veterans Day" observance at the beginning of the meeting, with Joe Fetter reading a poem detailing the appreciation and recognition of service members. Those who served in the military were asked to stand and applauded.

Committee reports were given on the status of the Scholarship Grant program applications, the publicity of various events for the group, and Jack Loup brought members up to date on pending legislative issues. Potential threats to the pension plans of Louisiana retired teachers were mentioned, but five different school groups are working towards the protecting retirement funds.

The new membership directory was distributed, and a new Facebook page was discussed.

Several health-information agencies presented news about the opportunities for retired persons to stay active and exercise. Ciara Rhodes, a nurse, gave an interesting overview of brain health concerns and symptoms, and Michelle Oubre (program chairman with Tivity Health) gave a demonstration on chair yoga, and the entire audience took part in the ten-minute workout. Silver Sneakers program activities were also described.

Representatives from the St. Tammany Federal Credit Union were on hand to share news of their financial services, including a visit by the "blue bus" which offers a mobile credit union branch.

Paul Bowman announced that plans were being finalized to offer a "day trip," on December 11 from Covington to the Destrehan Plantation. He described the tour highlights and said that the trip would cost $35 and leave from the parking lot of Second and Charles at 9 a.m. on December 11.

The next STRSEA meeting will take place on Thursday, Dec., 12, at 10:30 a.m. with pot luck lunch.

Here are some photographs from the meeting Thursday.

Members brought more than 100 new toys for donation to Project Christmas to be distributed to needy youngsters next month.

Members also contributed to the food collection efforts for needy families over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Spotlight on Eric Sacks

While we know Eric Sacks as a retired principal and as the hard working president of our retired educator association, he grew up as the son of a sailor.  While his father was stationed on the Naval Aircraft Carrier, the USS Coral Sea, Eric’s mother went back home to be with family in New Orleans when Eric was born.  Through his formative years, Eric and four siblings lived in California, Washington State, Taiwan, Virginia Beach, Texas, Florida, Rhode Island and finally Louisiana.

Some of his fondest memories involve playing in the snow in a small town in Rhode Island and his first real job selling toys in a toy store in Pensacola, Florida.  Of course, Eric would work in a toy store!
In 1981, Eric married his sweetheart Rose Marie Coburn from New Orleans.  The next year he began his career as an educator teaching special education at Miller Wall Elementary in Marrero.  In 1985, Eric moved across Jefferson Parish to Ella Dolhonde Elementary in Metairie.
In 1992, St. Tammany was lucky to land Eric as a 5th grade teacher at Clearwood Junior High where he remained until he became an assistant principal at Carolyn Park Middle School in 1999.  Finally, Eric moved to Whispering Forest Elementary as its principal in 2005 where he remained until his retirement in 2017. All who entered Whispering Forest during his years as head administrator remember a well-run, happy campus with a smiling Mr. Sacks welcoming all who visited!
It does not take long for anyone speaking to Eric to realize that while his career is in education, his heart is his family!  He and Rose have raised three beautiful children. The oldest is Jennifer who lives in Metairie and is the Director of Marketing at the WWII Museum.  Next is Eric Jr who works at the Slidell Pupil Appraisal Office for the St. Tammany Parish School System. And the youngest is Matthew who is an engineering student from LSU and UNO.
And while Eric is proud to be a dad, he is ecstatic to be a grandfather!  His daughter Jennifer has blessed Eric and Rose with 3-year-old twin grandsons, Jackson and Ben, and a beautiful two month-old granddaughter named Anna.
Now that Eric has retired, he makes time to go to the gym every day and enjoys watching the YouTube adventures of catamaran sailing shows.  He must have some of his father’s sailing blood in his veins. And his bucket list trip is to explore Italy with his wife Rose. Until they make that big trip, they enjoy eating out at James Restaurant in Lacombe or at Phil’s Marina CafĂ© in Slidell.
Eric’s artistic talents include drawing and singing.  As a Fellows Director with the School Leadership Center of New Orleans, Eric recently entertained the group with his Karaoke singing.  Perhaps we can get a sample of that one day!
When recalling his favorite memory of his time as an educator in St. Tammany Parish, Eric said it was each and every FIRST DAY of school!  He remembers the happy smiles of the children, parents and teachers! No one was sad about anything and there was hope in the air.
Now Eric is busy making new memories with Jackson, Ben and Anna.  When asked if there was anything else he would like to share, Eric said he loved the sound of being called Grand Dad!

Group To Meet On November 14

St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association will hold its next meeting of this year on Thursday, November 14th .

The St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association (STRSEA) invites St. Tammany public school retirees and their friends to this meeting.  This meeting will provide a health fair.  Flu shots (super flu shot for those 65 and older) will be available starting at 9:00 AM provided by Walgreen’s.  All that you need is a copy of your insurance information.

The social time will begin at 9:30 a.m. preceding the short business meeting allowing retirees to mingle and enjoy refreshments. The group will begin its business meeting at 10:00 a.m. at the Treen Technology Center, located at 2024 Livingston Street in Mandeville.

We ask that you bring a canned good to donate to the St. Tammany Food Bank.  Since our December meeting is so close to the start of Project Christmas, we are also asking members to bring a Christmas gift to donate for the children who are participating.  We want to be sure that the volunteers at Project Christmas get the gifts in time to prepare them for the distribution event.

Remember, the STRSEA meets regularly throughout the year to provide opportunities for retirees from the school system to hear about the important issues impacting local and state retirees and to enjoy fun and fellowship with new and former colleagues.   Our December meeting is Thursday, December 12th.  Mark your calendar.

See you November 14th .
