Spotlight on Marian Arrowsmith
Marian Arrowsmith retired from the school system in 2006 with 40 years of experience as a kindergarten, first and second grade teacher, a Title I Early Childhood Specialist, an elementary principal, and a Supervisor of Instruction in the Central Office. She holds a BS in Elementary Education from LSU and a Masters +30 in Education from SLU.
Marian began her teaching career in Gretna as a 1st grade teacher and then moved to Baton Rouge where she taught 1st grade and Kindergarten summer schools (at that time EBR didn’t have kindergartens in the schools so they offered 6 weeks of it during the summer.) She moved back to New Orleans in 1971 and in 1973 moved to St. Tammany and began to teach kindergarten at Folsom Elementary in an air-conditioned classroom!
At that time kindergarten was only a half-day program, so she taught a morning and an afternoon class…just imagine, 2 Halloween, 2 Christmas, 2 Valentine’s Day parties, etc. in a day! In 1976 she became a Title 1 Early Childhood Specialist. Her office was next to the Central Office building in what would later become William Pitcher Jr. High. The following year her office moved to part of Rosenwald School which would later become Harrison Curriculum Center.
Several years later she would find herself at the Educational Center. In March of 1987 Marian was asked to start an elementary school in Mandeville. This was the first time the district of Mandeville had been split, and the parents were not happy about it! The school, Mandeville East, would be where Mandeville Middle School was at that time which was originally the Mandeville Rosenwald School. The school became Woodlake Elementary and was opened in the fall of 1987. It started as a 1st-3rd grade school and later added Pre-K-3, which it remains today.
In 1994 Woodlake became a National Blue Ribbon School! In 1999 Marian became a Supervisor of Instruction in the Central Office where some of her duties included K-8 math, Pre-K programs and grants, liaison person with Regina Coeli Head Start Programs, Teacher Scholar Program with SLU, coordinator of curriculum specialists and resource helping teachers, and monitoring several grants including the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant which provided quality after school learning centers for students in many of our schools.
Marian has chosen to lead a fulfilling second half of life by building a house in Tellico Village, TN so they could be closer to their grandchildren in Ohio. They travelled from Mandeville to TN for about a year and then decided to sell their home in TN. They wanted to travel so after selling the home there they bought a motor home. They took many wonderful trips and made many great memories! Their loving pets, a high maintenance cat and a maltipoo dog loved traveling with them!
Marian began working part time for The Center for Developmental Learning and provided staff development and whole faculty study groups for schools in New Orleans.
She always wanted to learn how to paint so Marian began taking art lessons from Larry Casso at the Baton Rouge Fine Arts Academy where she met lots of wonderful friends. That group of close friends became the “Hue Dats” and meet on Fridays to paint together.
Other undertakings Marian has chosen since retiring include:
The only things typical about her days are the beginning and the end. Marian wakes up and then goes to sleep! She usually gets up between 6:30 and 7:30. Her cat helps make that decision! After feeding the cat she takes a mile walk around the neighborhood. When she arrives home she feeds her dog, and then takes him out for a walk. After that the “typical day” ends! In the evening she and her husband, Bill, enjoy dinner in their dining room. After dinner, they read, watch television and talk with out of town family on the phone.
What Marian values most in her friends is honesty and compassion.
When asked what the best thing she had eaten this week she replied, “See’s chocolate almond cluster candy!”
If Marian could have a super power, it would be to have everyone in the world learn to respect each other and to get along…to make our world a happy and safe place to live! (and to focus on showing good news instead of all of the negative news!)

- being an active member of the STRSEA where she served as its President for 4 terms
- hosting a TV show on Channel 13 spotlighting retired St. Tammany educators
- working for the School Leadership Center of Greater New Orleans doing learning walks in schools
- supervising student teachers for the University of Louisiana In Lafayette and the Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, Utah
- being Fellows Director for School Leadership Center of Greater New Orleans in St. Tammany Parish public, private and parochial schools
- volunteering at Clearwater Animal Sanctuary helping to care for and feed rescued animals such as, owls, pelicans, hawks, possums, and other animals needing care
- volunteering at the food bank for the Samaritan Center in Mandeville
- volunteering at Pontchartrain Yacht Club where she is currently serving on its Board as the Social Chair

Retired Teachers Association To Meet November 9 For Special Health Fair
The St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association will meet at ten
a.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at the David C. Treen Instructional
Technology Center in Mandeville. In observance of Veterans Day, members
are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
Toys and gifts are being sought for donations to this year's "Project Christmas," so members are asked to bring those items for distribution to boys and girls throughout the parish. For more information on suggested gifts items, CLICK HERE.
A special health fair will be set up early, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with informational booths on vaccines, medication adherence (bring your medicine in a brown paper bag), screenings, benefit questions, blood pressure checks, etc. The "Silver Sneakers" organization will have a booth and give a demonstration before the meeting. Members who wish to receive flu shots should bring their insurance/health cards.
Vendors will include Humana, St. Tammany Hospital, Mary Byrd Perkins, Tivity Health (Silver Sneakers), and Walgreens. There will also be a healthy cooking demonstration. Health fair booths will remain available for members until 1 p.m.
Members arriving early at 9:30 a.m. will enjoy a social get-together time to catch up with each other since the last meeting, in addition to taking advantage of the health fair booths.
“We feel it is important for our retirees to join both the state retired teachers organization, the LRTA, and our local group, the STRSEA, this year to build our St. Tammany associate and retiree memberships,” said President Roxanne Lagarde. “Membership means a lot to our members as well as insures our voice will be heard when needed. We encourage all public school system retirees to come and join in our association. We hope to see you on November 9th.”
The agenda for the upcoming meeting includes a report on the recent LRTA conference, which several members attended. The business meeting this week will feature the latest reports from the president, the vice president, secretary and treasurer, as well as updates on continuing legislative concerns and the status of educational scholarship applications. As always, there will be fun activities, refreshments, snacks, door prizes and other giveaways.
The Treen Technology Center is located at 2024 Livingston Street in Mandeville. The STRSEA meets regularly throughout the year to provide opportunities for retirees from the school system to hear about the important issues impacting local and state retirees and to enjoy fun and fellowship with new and former colleagues. Meetings are generally on the second Thursday of September, November, December, March and May, including an annual Christmas party and spring luncheon.
At a board meeting last week, officers discussed the signing up of new members, the ongoing orders for association T-shirts and polo shirts, and the need for volunteers to teach in various community out-reach organizations.
For a once-only fee of $45, the STRSEA offers a life-time membership that entitles members to vote on association matters, furnishes an identification card that allows St. Tammany members free admission to all home games at school system athletic events and provides a St. Tammany Advantage Rewards (STAR) card for discounts at participating local businesses and restaurants.

Spotlight on Sheila and Jack Loup

As a couple Sheila and Jack served 53 years in
education! As a Covington High graduate
Sheila was pleased to be a paraprofessional at her alma mater. She retired in 2010 with 20 years of service
and enjoys attending conferences with Jack and participating in many school
activities with their grandchildren.
They have 2 children, Candice and Stephen, who also graduated from
Covington High and 3 grandchildren.
Sheila and Jack very happily celebrated their 50th Wedding
Anniversary in June.
Jack retired in 2003 with 33 years in education. He has a Masters+30 in Education. He began his teaching career at Pine View Junior High and then was transferred to Covington Jr. and then to Covington High. While at
Covington High he served as a teacher, coach, Assistant Principal, and then
Principal. He also served as Principal
at both C.J. Schoen Middle and Madisonville Jr.
After retiring Jack has stayed very active within his community. He was the Recreation Director for the City
of Covington for 2 years, and then was elected to serve on the St Tammany
School Board in 2006 and is currently in his 3rd term. He was the Board President for four years.
Jack founded the Coalition for Louisiana
Public Education and after two years over 30 organizations have joined. He received the Louisiana Federation of
Teachers’ Friend of Education Award in 2011.
He is currently on the Board of Directors for the Louisiana School
Boards Association and has served on the STRSEA’s board for the past seven
years as our Legislative Chair, as well as, serving as its President from
2007-2010.
A typical day ranges from either sleeping late or getting
up early to take a grandchild to school and then working in the yard. They both enjoy having lunch with their
friends and family in the Covington/Mandeville areas. Tuesday mornings are reserved for golf and
Thursday evenings for the School Board meetings. Saturday afternoons are saved for picking up
Jack’s mom, who is 90 years young, for church and then dinner together.
Sheila lists making jewelry, tending to flowers in the
yard, and baking as her hobbies. Jack
has been playing golf and bowling for over 60 years! If Jack were given the
chance to compete in the Olympics it would definitely have to be in golf!
A favorite website to kill some time for Sheila is
Pinterest…she enjoys checking for ideas for birthdays and holidays.
A fun fact about Sheila and Jack is that they take short
vacations with their grandchildren every year.
I asked them, “After celebrating your 50th
wedding anniversary, what would you say is the secret to a successful
marriage?” Their answer: "it consists of expressing our
opinions and then moving on." They have
grown together over the years and enjoy doing things as a couple.

Group Donates Items for Hurricane Victims
Tables full of donated items brought by members of the St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association filled a truck bound for hurricane victims Thursday, following the group's first meeting of the school year at the Treen Instructional Technology Center in Mandeville.

Superintendent W. L. "Trey" Folse spoke to members of the St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association (STRSEA) on Thursday, September 14, about the new initiatives for the School Year and student statistics for 2017-2018. For its first meeting of the School Year, the St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association met at the David C. Treen Instructional Technology Center in Mandeville. Ninety-three persons attended.

Spotlight on Donna and Tom Lusignan

Tom began his teaching career in 1972 at Riverdale High in Jefferson Parish. While there he taught Driver’s Ed, Free Enterprise, Civics, Financial Math, and both elementary and high school PE. He was also an Athletic Trainer and Coach. In 1994 he was hired at Northshore High as a Psychology teacher, Health Education teacher, athletic trainer and coach. Three years later he accepted a position as Counselor and also remained the school’s Athletic Trainer. Tom retired in 2010 after 38 years in education.
Donna has chosen to lead a fulfilling second half of her life by volunteering in the Slidell area and becoming more involved with her church. She is a life member of the Junior Auxiliary of Slidell, which is a women’s organization that provides service projects to meet the needs of children, families and the elderly in the community. As a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, she has assisted with the school supply and Thanksgiving food drives, Project Christmas, and providing meals for families in need. She is also participating in a weekly Bible Study group. The Krewe of Selene Carnival organization will be a new adventure for Donna this year, and she’s excited about riding on a float during their Mardi Gras parade in Slidell.
Working part-time for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau is something that Donna looks forward to. She works 6-8 conventions yearly, usually as a computer operator/cashier at attendee registration. It’s a great opportunity to meet and talk with people from all over the world.
Tom has chosen to lead a fulfilling second half of his life by volunteering for charitable events in the New Orleans area with one of his daughters. He and Donna also enjoy traveling together. They spend time at their beach condo on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach and their family fishing camp in Chauvin. They also love to visit Gatlinburg. Both love cruises and usually plan at least one a year.
A typical day for Donna begins slowly, if possible, since she is not a morning person. She enjoys a cup of coffee with a light breakfast while she checks her emails and Facebook. She motivates herself to exercise or attend yoga classes at her local gym a few mornings a week. Afternoons are busy with household chores, errands, and/or lunch with friends. Donna loves to cook so she and Tom enjoy dinner together at home on most weeknights. Evenings are spent planning their next trip, watching HGTV, and reading before bedtime.
Tom’s typical day begins with walking his dog, then eating a bagel with his coffee. He catches up with the news by reading the local paper or an online news source. After checking his emails, he gets ready to go to the health club for a two hour workout then maybe run a few errands. He returns home for lunch then reads for a while. He loves to read and can usually read one or two novels a week. He enjoys books by Clive Cussler, David Baldacci, James Patterson, Lee Child, Stuart Woods or Robert Parker. If needed, he does a few chores around the house and yard. After dinner, he reads a little more or watches TV. Occasionally, he will surf the internet.
When asked their favorite place for breakfast Tom said that he enjoyed several restaurants, but their favorite place for breakfast is at home for Saturday morning bacon, eggs, and toast. Tom and Donna started this tradition when they married 44 years ago, and it continues today.
If they could live in any other location besides St. Tammany, they could see themselves living together on a tropical island. Perhaps Maui or St. John in the Virgin Islands would be nice places to spend their retirement years!
I asked if there was something that they couldn’t live without and Tom said, “Being able to exercise.” He has been involved with athletics his whole life. Donna’s answer was, “Something I could not live without is my family and friends. They keep me active and involved. There's no time to feel bored!”

Retired Teachers Group Holds Spring Luncheon
The St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association held its Spring Luncheon for 2017 on Thursday, May 11,with 58 people in attendance at the David C. Treen Instructional
Technology Center in Mandeville. It was the group's final meeting of the school
year.
New officers for the 2017-2018 year were sworn into office. They are returning President Roxanne Lagarde, Donna Harvin as President-Elect, Lyn Monteleone as First Vice President, Cheryl Beaver as Second Vice President, Renee Arsenault as Secretary and Ron Caruso was Treasurer. They were sworn into office by Renee Siccone, assistant director of the La. Retired Teachers Association.
The winner of this year's $1000 educational scholarship winner is Jane Kathryn Burriss. She was presented with the check as her parents Keith and Fran Burriss looked on. Miss Burriss graduated from Northshore High last week with a 4.3 GPA and an ACT score of 31. She will attend Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond to major in Early Childhood Education.
The St. Tammany Retired School Employees Association awarded its annual Lifetime Achievement Award to Bill Brugmann and its Retired Employee of the Year Award to Carolyn Brugmann. Jack Loup delivered the legislative report, telling about state bills that would provide for less testing and more teaching, as well the status of the TOPS funding
bills.
Members brought a variety of food items, desserts and appetizers for the group to enjoy at the annual Spring Luncheon. A number of door prizes and other prizes were given away.

Roxanne Lagarde receives an LRTA Membership Award from Renee Siccone, LRTA Assistant Director, recognizing St. Tammany's achievement in having the Largest Number of Associate Members in the state in 2016. The award was originally made at the recent Spring Conference held by the LRTA.

The St. Tammany Federal Credit Union, Humana and the Mandeville Bake Shop were all thanked for their continued support of the organization and its members.
